Police have given lockdown fines to a couple who were caught stargazing in a country lane.

Officers from Derbyshire police were on patrol near Swarkestone in South Derbyshire on Saturday night, February 20, when they came across the pair.

Melbourne and Mercia Police Safer Neighbourhood Team (SNT) said this was a breach of lockdown restrictions and gave each person a Covid fine.

It added that the team also came across a youth on an electric scooter in Littleover, with officers returning him home and speaking to his parents about his behaviour.

Government guidance states people should only leave home for specific reasons such as work, education and childcare, and essential activities such as shopping or exercise.

Anyone who breaks these rules can be given a a fixed penalty notice of £200 for a first offence, doubling for further offences up to a maximum of £6,400.
