A controlling partner returned to "bullying, belittling and intimidating" his partner as she fought cancer.
Derby Crown Court heard how sneaky Paul Finlayson wormed his way back into the woman's life with promises of looking after her after he was released from prison.
But within days he was accusing her of sleeping with another man, checking her mobile phone for messages and pestering her for drug money.
When the police became involved he bombarded the victim with messages and, when officers found him hiding under a duvet, he assaulted a female PC.
Jailing the defendant for three years, Recorder Adrian Reynolds said: "I have listened carefully to your advocate's (barrister's) courageous attempts to put some sort of gloss on this but I am afraid I take the view that your behaviour has been appalling and about the worse example of this kind of behaviour I can readily
