There were tears and applause from campaigners as plans for a controversial £200 million incinerator on the outskirts of a Derbyshire town were rejected. The scheme, from R&P Clean Power Limited, would have seen a third incinerator built in the Derby and South Derbyshire area, off Keith Willshee Way, close to the A444 on the outskirts of Swadlincote.
In a long-awaited and irregular Derbyshire County Council meeting today (Monday, September 2) councillors unanimously rejected the plans, to the joy of campaigners in the audience. This had followed a 20-minute private recess where councillors had been to discuss a deferral of a decision and work out the exact information they require from the developers to be able to make an informed choice.
Following the private break, councillors chose to unanimously reject the plans, instead of deferring the decision,
