Derby special school places could be expanded while visual impairment support centre may be scrapped

Spaces for pupils with special educational needs at a Derby school are set to be drastically increased – though extra support at a primary school is due to be scrapped. A new report from Derby City Council, to be discussed on Wednesday, September 11, will see a public consultation launched on plans to expand the number of spaces for pupils with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) at Kingsmead School from 110 to 180.

The 70-space expansion at Kingsmead, a special school on two sites in Brighton Road, and Wisgreaves Road, Alvaston, represents a 63 per cent increase. A council report shows that Kingsmead currently has a requirement to cater for 111 children on education, health and care plans, which are legally binding documents between the council, school, parent and child, laying out how their needs must
