Rachel Reeves faces backlash over cuts to UK pensioners' winter fuel payments

Rachel Reeves has dismissed calls to reverse her cuts to winter fuel payments despite warnings that the majority of impoverished pensioners will be adversely affected. The Chancellor insisted that retirees are £900 "better off" than last year while justifying her decision to cut their financial support this year.

During a fierce debate in the House of Commons, Ms Reeves faced criticism for making a "chilling political choice to balance the books of this country on the very frailest shoulders". This comes as a former pensions minister's analysis revealed that 1.6 million older people living in poverty will miss out on winter fuel payments.
