Four sailors, including one from Leicestershire, are to be awarded the Merchant Navy Medal after they helped save more than 100 lives in the Mediterranean Sea. Ben Bramwell, from Leicestershire, and his crewmates rushed to help migrants who were in the water after the boat they were being smuggled in capsized late at night.
He was the coxswain of the 93-metre luxury yacht The Mayan Queen IV, which responded to a distress call and worked with the Greek authorities to help get the people out of the water. The yacht also lowered its lifeboat to help search for more survivors of the fishing boat The Adriana, which sank in June last year.
The crew pulled between 10 and 15 people from the sea and later helped transfer others to land after they had been rescued by the coastguard. While 104 of the migrants were saved, it is estimated that
