Concern and anger have been expressed by a large number of people over an application by Derby City Council to remove a planning condition regarding the demolition of the Assembly Rooms. The condition currently prevents the demolition of the well-known city venue until a replacement scheme has been given planning permission, is contracted out and has a timeframe for its implementation.
The condition was implemented to prevent the site standing empty without firm plans for its future use. Even if the condition is removed and demolition goes ahead, it could still be almost five years before buildings to replace the Assembly Rooms are completed in the Market Place.
