'Grim' and 'disappointing' Derby council budget position condemned by opposition groups

Derby City Council's financial situation has been labelled "grim" and "disappointing" by opposition groups on the local authority after it was revealed that it is heading for a potential £9.6 million overspend next March - based on just the first quester of the current financial year's figures - and facing more than £22 million of additional costs, largely in social service provision.

The council has admitted it is facing "significant financial strain" and will maintain strict controls on spending and recruitment, while it continues to find "innovative ways to deliver good and cost-effective services".

Conservative group leader Councillor Steve Hassall said: "These figures make very grim and concerning reading and, sadly, despite the vague and uncompelling reassurance that the council will find 'innovative ways to deliver good and cost-effective services' we all know it will be the Derby taxpayer who will pay
