Parents warned by Martin Lewis 'misleading' scheme for £2,000 help isn't being used by 500,000

Martin Lewis has warned parents that they shouldn't take one government scheme at face value because hundreds of thousands are missing out. Some working parents are able to take advantage of Tax-Free Childcare to receive up to £2,000 a year for each child they have. The money is then used to help afford childcare costs which can include childminders and nurseries.

It is believed around 1.3 million families are eligible for the scheme, but only 800,000 are taking advantage. One key issue with the scheme though is in the name itself.

Writing on the MSE website, Martin said: "Calling the scheme Tax-Free Childcare was a political spin to ensure government gets credit for the scheme. Unfortunately the name is appallingly misleading, and probably partly responsible for the scheme having a much lower take up than it should. It's not about tax in anyway, and isn’t linked to the
