Volunteers needed at Leicester's overcrowded and 'no longer fit for purpose' prison

Calls have been made for more people to help monitor a struggling Leicestershire prison. Prisons up and down the country are inspected by a team of volunteers to ensure they are up to standard.

A recent visit to HMP Leicester by the local independent monitoring board (IMB) threw up a number of concerns and resulted in the team branding the ageing prison “no longer fit for purpose” and in need of “considerable investment to bring it up to an acceptable standard”. The inspection also revealed increasing incidents of violence and self-harm and high levels of drug use there.
