Holidaymakers using East Midlands Airport, in Leicestershire, were forced to fly without their luggage after a “baggage system fault”. Seventeen flights were affected, with the number of bags missing when the planes departed ranging from one to 168.

The incident affected flights leaving the Castle Donington airport yesterday (Sunday, September 15). Seven Jet2, five Tui and five Ryanair flights were impacted, said an airport spokesperson. There were “some delays” as a result, he added.

The spokesman said passengers were “expected” to be reunited with their baggage within the next 24 hours. Flights to Girona, Alicante, Arrecife, Faro, Enfidha, Palma, Benidorm, Dubrovnik, Lanzarote, Skiathos, Dalaman, Malaga, Luga and Krakow were affected.
