A man short of cash after playing slot machines agreed to steal petrol to order but was easily recognised by police. Clint James, who already had a criminal record for various shoplifting offences, twice went to the Shell filling station in Leicester Road, Wigston, and filled up a barrel with petrol before driving off without paying.

On both instances he stole fuel worth more than £80 and fled. At Leicester Magistrates' Court on Monday he pleaded guilty to the two charges of making off without payment.

Both crimes took place while James, 47, of Dunstall Avenue, Braunstone Town, was subject to a community order for stealing a stack of cashmere jumpers from Marks & Spencer in
