A new multi-million pound science block has opened at a Derby secondary school to ease pressure on the numbers of pupils moving from city primary schools into secondary education over the next few years. St Benedict Catholic Academy was one of five secondary schools which agreed to increase its pupil intake last September and again this month.

The school in Duffield Road agreed to take 90 extra pupils both years but needed more space to be able to accommodate them. As a result, Derby City Council cabinet was asked to approve a grant of £6.165 million from its buildings programme to provide the extra space for 180 extra pupils.

Overall, there will be more than 1,000 more pupils in the city secondary schools by 2026-27, up from 18,648 currently to around 19,775.
