I suffered sensory overload at one of the UK's oldest fairgrounds

When I was told I would be visiting one of the UK's oldest annual fairs at the beginning of the week, I was a little apprehensive. Not because I thought I wouldn't enjoy it, but because I wasn't really sure what to expect. Would it be quiet? Would I struggle to write about what was going on?

No, it wasn't, and no, I wouldn't. I approached Ilkeston's Market Place, which has been home to the town's Charter Fair for more than 770 years, expecting a few streets with some market stalls and maybe the occasional helter-skelter. Instead, I was met with a dense and jam-packed setting, filled with punters and vendors alike underneath the bright lights of towering rides and amusements.

I arrived at around 5.30pm on Wednesday (October 16), thinking I'd made a genius decision getting there before Erewash locals descended on the town centre in their numbers
