Cameras going up outside Leicester schools to ‘deter’ parents who ignore traffic rules

Cameras are to be installed outside two city schools as a “deterrent” to parents who “flout” traffic rules designed to protect children. The automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) cameras will be set up outside Overdale Infant and Junior Schools, in Northfold Road and Eastcourt Road.

The two roads have formed part of Leicester City Council’s 'School Streets' initiative since February 2022. The scheme bans most vehicles from entering the streets during school run times – from 8am until 9am and from 2.30pm until 4pm on weekdays – in a bid to improve road safety and air quality, and reduce congestion, at the beginning and end of each school day. But the signs put up to advise drivers of the restrictions are being met with “comparatively little compliance” and an “increasing number of parents [are] driving into the zone”, the council said.
