Parents and carers who feared losing their children's specialist transport have been given a reprieve. The controversial move, which had left many carers "stressed" and "demoralised", had been due to come into force this autumn.

The proposal, by Leicester City Council, would have seen special educational needs and disability (SEND) transport for people aged 16 and over removed at the beginning of this current academic year. It was a move that angered many parents, with some said to feel "alienated" and fearing how they would get their children to school.

However, since making the decision earlier this year to continue to provide transport to young people who have an education health care plan (EHCP) - which indicates a transport need - at the start of this academic year, the council has now made those plans official by updating its policy for 2024/25.
